The roots of Orgelbau Jann go back to the year 1948 to Potsdam. Here Georg Jann was an apprentice as an organ builder to Karl Schuke before he founded his own organ building firm. From 1961 on, his professionel way lead him from Switzerland and West Berlin to Regensburg. In 1974 Georg Jann took over the firm of Eduard Hirnschrodt in Regensburg and in 1975 the first organ was built in the new factory with 5 employees for the church of Etzelwang.

Shortly thereafter the firm took orders for three- manual organs, and in 1980 it was commissioned to build an organ with 52 stops for the St. Joseph Church in Memmingen. Hence, the firm had to move into a larger factory to Allkofen-Laberweinting, a village in the the south of Regensburg where other big organs were later built.

These include the organ for the Oporto Cathedral, built in 1985, three organs for the Basilica in Waldsassen with 103 stops and two six- manual consoles, built in 1989, the 74 stop concert organ for the concert hall “Sinfonie an der Regnitz”, home of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, built in 1993, and the main organ and choir organ with together 131 stops, built for the Munich Cathedral in 1994. So in only 20 years the small organ building shop grew into a world renowned organ building firm that has built more than 260 organ so far.

He restoration department has performed exemplary restoration work since 1987 (including Steinmeyer, Stieffell, Schwarz, Ehrlich, Edenhofer and Brandenstein). The current manager, Thomas Jann, master organ builder, entered the firm in 1986 after training with the firm Richard Rensch. From 1983 to 1986 Thomas Jann worked for Karl Schuke in Berlin and specialized himself in intonation and crafting of metal pipes.

In 1990 he took his master craftsman’s diploma in Ludwigsburg. Thomas Jann is the firm’s general manager since 1995. Since 1999 he has been restorer of organs and harmoniums.

Since September 1999 he has been a publicly appointed and sworn expert of the chamber of handicrafts of Niederbayern-Oberpfalz. Under Thomas Jann’s management, large organs again have been constructed and restored in the past years, among them in Gotteszell near Deggendorf (a French-symphonic three- manual organ with 45 stops), in the Stiftspfarrkirche of Altötting (main and choir organ with 49 an 26 stops) in the famous monastery church of Andechs (three- manual with 36 stops) and in Düdelingen, Luxembourg (an extended Stahlhuth organ with 78 stops on four manuals).

In 2006, another trend-setting instrument was constructed. The organ was built for the Protestant Marien church of Gunzenhausen with 45 stops and a pedal with electric single tone valves. In 2007, again several organs in the Regensburg diocese were renewed or reconstructed. Besides Sattelpeilnstein, the congregations of Neubäu and Rittsteig obtained new Jann organs.

The organ of the parish church of Neustadt/Waldnaab was renewed and extended. The Steinmeyer organ of the Protestant church St. Andreas in Weißenburger was renewed in 2007 after having achieved the status of historical protection. In order to meet the increasing sound requirements an auxiliare was built similar to the one of the Weise organ of Neustadt/Waldnaab.
